How to prevent TV tip-overs

The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched shows on TV every year. It’s also the perfect time to raise awareness of TV safety, which is often overlooked as part of home safety and childproofing.

According to "Safe Kids Worldwide", citing data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, ten children go to emergency room each day due to a TV tipping over. Furthermore, seven out of ten children injured by TV tip-overs are aged five or under.

It is important to protect your kids from the potential risks of a TV tipping over. Check out the following tips to ensure TV safety for your children.

1.    Use TV mounts and brackets to keep the TV secure.

Flat-panel TVs are large and can easily tip over if not placed properly, especially if young children climb on them or try to reach them. Therefore, it is better to use a TV mount or bracket to provide stability. Aside from increasing security, most TV mounts feature cable management to keep cords and wires organised and avoid trips and falls. Remember to check the weight capacity and VESA compatibility of the mount to ensure it is suitable for your TV.

2.    Place the TV on the TV stand.

A 36" CRT TV weighing 36 kg falling 3 feet creates the same momentum as a 1-year-old child falling 10 storeys. If you have a box-style CRT TV that cannot be mounted on the wall, make sure you use an anti-tip bracket or place it on a low, stable stand appropriate for its size and weight. Furthermore, position the TV as far back on the stand as possible to prevent children from reaching it.

3.    Other tips:

Don’t put items that children love, such as biscuits, snacks and toys, on the TV stand so they aren’t tempted to climb up to reach them. Additionally, store heavier items on the bottom shelves or in the lower drawers to keep the TV stand stable. Furthermore, avoid hanging rope-like ornaments around the TV as your children might pull them down, which could lead to accidents and injuries.
